Getting home and enjoying a good wine is, without a doubt, one of life’s great pleasures.
Although for that to be possible, the ideal thing is to have a wine cellar at home in which to store the wines in the right conditions to ensure their optimum preservation. As you surely know, at gHouse we make it easy for you to have a wine cellar in your home by taking charge of the whole project, from design to construction.
Would you like to have your own wine cellar? Well, to start with, we will tell you about certain requirements and particularities that a space needs to meet in order to become the perfect wine cellar.
This is what a home wine cellar should be like.
To build a wine cellar in a home, it is necessary to have a space that meets a series of specific requirements to ensure that the wine is stored in optimal conditions, preserving its quality and flavour over time.
Here are some of the main characteristics and conditions that should be considered:
1.- Regarding the location:
The cellar should be located in a cool, dark and vibration-free place. A cellar or a space that is below the building level of the rest of the house is usually the ideal place because an underground location provides a more stable and cooler environment.
It should also be relatively large, although this depends on the wine collection that each person wants to keep inside. But it should always be large enough to have enough space to accommodate the wine bottles properly and comfortably.
2.- Regarding temperature:
Temperature is one of the most critical factors in wine preservation. The cellar must maintain a constant temperature, ideally between 12 and 16 degrees. It is vital to avoid sudden fluctuations, as they can negatively affect the wine. To achieve this, it may be necessary to install a specific air conditioning system for wine cellars and to take into account other aspects such as ventilation or humidity, which we will now discuss.
3.- Regarding humidity:
4.- Regarding ventilation:
Good ventilation is essential to avoid the accumulation of odours that can penetrate the corks and alter the taste of the wine. A home wine cellar should have a ventilation system that allows the circulation of fresh air and helps to maintain the ideal temperature.
5.- Regarding lighting:
Wine should be stored in a dark environment, as light, especially direct sunlight, can degrade the wine. It is recommended to use dim lighting and avoid bulbs that generate heat. LED lights are a good option because of their low heat emission.
6.- Regarding construction materials:
The walls and floor of the cellar must be well insulated to maintain a constant temperature and humidity. The materials used should be resistant to humidity and vibrations. Shelves made of treated wood or metal are ideal for storing the bottles horizontally, which keeps the corks moist and prevents air from entering.
Meeting these requirements will ensure that the wine cellar provides a perfect environment for storing and ageing wine, preserving its quality and value. Would you like to have a wine cellar at home?
