Exposed brick, a growing trend in interior spaces.

If you like architecture, decoration and interior design, you are surely aware of the great boom in the technique of “exposed materials”, especially when it comes to brick.

The so-called exposed brick or facing brick consists of leaving this building material visible, as if it were a final finish or a cladding material in itself for exterior walls, but now also for interior walls.

In the projects that we carry out at gHouse, one of the most consolidated architectural studios in Mallorca, we are aware of the great demand for this technique, which offers many advantages and gives a very specific aesthetic to the homes that opt for it. We will tell you more about it below.

What does the “exposed materials” technique consist of?

Basically, we could say that this technique consists of leaving materials that have been used in construction such as brick, plaster, cement… in plain view without covering them with some kind of cladding that hides them from view.

Undoubtedly, when we think of this technique, facing brick or exposed brick is the first option that comes to mind as it is the most popular, both for outdoor spaces and now also indoors.

But it is not the only case: there are also the shelves that are created with plasterboard and that look just as they are, without paint or varnish to ornament them; the wooden beams with metallic fastening fixtures that are no longer hidden but are enhanced as decorative elements; the plaster that is exposed without being treated with paint…

What are the benefits of exposed brick in the home?

Well, using this technique in a room in your home brings numerous benefits, both from a functional and decorative point of view. As we said, this option has been very common for some time now and it is increasingly common to find living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens with their walls, or some of them, clad directly with exposed brick.

Among the main benefits of opting for this exposed brick technique are the following:

1.- It brings a more urban, industrial and underground aesthetic touch to a room.

But it is also able to do so by ensuring that this contribution is perfectly integrated into any type of decoration, whether minimalist or rustic, modern or classic.

2.- It reduces the total cost of a renovation by avoiding the need to carry out subsequent phases such as smoothing the wall and applying paint or wallpaper.

Although in this sense, we must also say that, in some cases, the treatments applied afterwards to achieve a specific effect (for example, bricks painted in a specific colour) can increase the final price.

3.- It speeds up the time required for the work, as subsequent phases such as those mentioned in the previous point are not necessary.

If it is not necessary to apply a layer of cement, wait for it to dry, prepare the base of the wall and then paint it, the completion of the work comes sooner.

4.- It transmits an original and different touch which, in many cases, can be a counterpoint to the general decoration of a home to make it more personal.

Undoubtedly, it is an option that confers a very specific aesthetic value, as what would be a “normal” wall becomes a wall with great decorative weight when the brick is exposed. This is why it is a beautiful option, but only if it is used correctly.

It is important to be clear that, when opting for this technique, both the expertise of the professionals who carry it out and the quality of the construction materials chosen must be of the highest quality in order to achieve a really high quality result.
