Three good ideas for separating spaces without building work.
In our architecture studio in Mallorca we have found that the needs of each client are unique. While some clients ask us for a refurbishment and interior design project in which open-plan and connected spaces are a priority, others prefer to create a certain separation between areas and, if possible, with as little building work as possible.
This last case is a great challenge for us, as it is usually a matter of separating spaces that have been conceived as a whole but which in reality have areas in which different functions are carried out.
How to separate spaces without building work? How to create that difference without abruptly breaking up the whole? How to distinguish the kitchen from the living room or the dining room from the living room when they are one? Today we bring you three ideas for separating spaces that are as effective as they are beautiful. And most importantly, without building work.
Separating spaces without building work and without total rupture
These three ideas can be very practical for creating different atmospheres in areas that are originally connected. What they all have in common is that they are very simple and easy to incorporate and do not require major building work or large budgets. Here are our favourites:
1.- Sliding doors:
Sliding doors are one of the most common solutions. They are easy to install, completely separate one space from another and, when you wish, reconnect them with a simple gesture. That is why they are perfect for separating rooms that connect with a common area or living rooms and kitchens that join dining rooms.
Among their advantages are that they are a very economical resource, they do not leave corners unused, they optimise space, they allow communicating rooms and they are very aesthetic. Some of them can function as if they were mobile partitions.
2.- Glass walls:
It is another highly recommended option that provides obvious advantages such as luminosity, the feeling of spaciousness or the connection between the separated spaces. It is a glass enclosure that can be very nice to separate two areas that will remain connected both physically and visually.
We recommend this option for separating spaces such as the kitchen from the dining room or living room. You will create a very cosy whole but in which both parts are perfectly delimited without there being a total rupture. And the most important thing is that you will hardly need to do any building work to carry out this separation of spaces.
3.- Structure of vertical slats made of different materials:
The aesthetic effect of this partition is really spectacular, the favourite for us! We are talking about a fixed structure made of slats that can be made of wood, aluminium or other materials.
The slats can be painted in the tone that best suits the chromatic range of the room and can also have a greater or lesser thickness.
This structure separates in a very light way, helps to distribute the space without being an obstacle by allowing light to pass through. This is why they are very suitable in bedrooms to separate the bed from the dressing room or work area; they are also very suitable for living rooms that are connected to the kitchen.
