How to choose the right dining table

The dining table may seem like an inconsequential piece of furniture. However, its prominence is key to the design of the rest of the room. As an interior design studio in Mallorca, we would like to give you some expert advice on how to choose the perfect one for your home.

Choosing a dining table: where to start

If you’re a rule-follower, here’s a helpful tip: each diner needs about 60 cm in width (add 10 cm if the chairs have arms) and about 40 cm in depth to be comfortable. This rule is not unbreakable, but it helps a lot if you are going to use the table a lot.

Some indicative measurements are:

  • 120×80 in rectangular tables for four people
  • 120 cm diameter for round tables for 3 to 6 persons
  • 150 cm diameter in the case of 6 to 8 persons

Design and materials, which are better?

Although these variables depend entirely on personal taste, there are several factors that guide the decision.

Glass tables are lighter, but also cooler. Wooden tables, on the other hand, look heavier, but provide more warmth.

A beautiful table can be used without a tablecloth, simply with a table runner or a table runner. Also take into account the resistance and durability of the materials depending on the use you are going to give to this piece of furniture. A dining room that is only used on special occasions is not the same as a dining room where several people eat every meal of the day.

Round, rectangular, oval… Which table do I choose?

Although this is also a matter of personal taste, there are a few recommendations to keep in mind.

  • Square tables are the most voluminous. The minimum size for a square table is 70 x 70 cm for two people. A table of 100 x 100 is already comfortable for a family of four.
  • Rectangular tables are the most versatile. They are perfect for attaching to the wall or for use as a free-standing island. Ideally, there should be at least 90 cm of free space between the table and the wall, or the nearest piece of furniture, so that you can move around freely.
  • Round tables are ideal for small dining rooms or passageways. If you have enough space, you can opt for an extendable table for when there are guests. This type of table encourages communication between diners, but make sure that the legs do not get in the way.

If you still have any doubts, think about where the table will be placed. Where it will be placed will help determine its design – do you want it to blend in with the décor of the room, or do you want it to stand out and stand out?

Although it is a fun task, designing the interior design of a home is not easy. Choosing one dining table or another can be a determining factor in the resulting ensemble. The best way to achieve ideal results is to let yourself be advised by a team like ours.
